It’s important, if you have employees, that the differences between full time, part time, casual, shift workers and probationary workers are understood. A knowledge of hours of work, breaks and rosters, uniforms, vehicle and travel entitlements are just some of the necessary points to be aware of.
Employee entitlements basically means and benefit entitlements the employee might accumulate whilst working for their employer, such as annual leave, sick leave, long service leave, superannuation and so on. Correct reporting in your accounting software package will ably keep track of these possible entitlements and accrue them as necessary.
Some hidden catches can create havoc if you are unsure of your awards and requirements. For example: Casual employees work irregular hours and therefore are not entitled to holiday and sick leave. However if a casual employee’s hours become quite regular, beware that they do not then fall into a part time employee status. If this happened they would be entitled to pro-rate holiday and sick leave. Employees who are entitled to leave can accrue their leave. Sometimes the accrual conditions can be dictated within an employee contract but there are still specific guidelines to be followed as set by Fair Work.
